Stop Projecting

FLG has got no problem with Michelle Obama. In fact, he finds the entire family endearing in a wholesome, all-American sorta way. But he just can't stomach the repeated assertions that Michelle is some sort of fashion-forward icon with great taste. She simply isn't and doesn't.

Look, he doesn't want people to rag on her for this. He'd rather everybody simply stopped commenting on Michelle's appearance. (All first ladies, for that matter.) But the whole Michelle Obama is a fashion icon needs to stop. FLG can tell this is untrue because he has eyes. Again, she seems like an intelligent, nice lady. No need to bring this stuff up. But what explains this cognitive dissonance among so many in the media?

FLG's pet theory is that the ladies in the left-leaning media, and by that he basically means almost all women working in mainstream media, are projecting their own desires onto Michelle. If they were first lady, then they'd like to be seen as a fashion icon. Consequently, they want Michelle to be a fashion icon. They want it so bad that they are willing to overlook that her fashion sense is questionable at best and downright horrible at worst. There's no other way to explain it.

Oh yes there is.

It’s not projection, it’s self-regard by way of affiliation. There is a portal one passes through when traveling Left. When entered the traveler has become perfected - without ever having to demonstrate it. The stupid become smart; the ugly, pretty; the wrong, right; the colorful afro-bohemian, tres elegant.

"...wholesome, all-American ..."?

Really. The "For the first time in my life, I'm proud of my country" FLOTUS candidate? From the "no vacation is too big if it's abroad" recession era FLOTUS?

Does not compute.

If she weren't married to the President of the United States, no one would ever think to call Michelle attractive or fashionable. But no one would be after her for her looks, either.

Yes, Michelle had a faux-career in the law based on her marriage to Barack. (Her $300K job was abolished as unnecessary once she left it.)

Yes, she dresses somewhat bizarrely. (Hey, Michelle: Stay away from J. Crew, it's not your friend!)

Yes, she seems to take a dim view of white people as a class. (Is she tithing to Princeton these days? I bet not.)

But imagine the sort of grief she'd be getting from her critics if she'd actually killed someone else in a late night car crash. (And by and large Laura Bush was left alone alone.)

I realize politics has gotten much, much worse over the past forty years. I expect it to get worse still. But you'd think we could all at least observe the same restraint as the Mafia with regard to familial noncombatants. (After all, no one has suggested she's advising Barack on policy matters on the basis of horoscope readings.)

I stopped blogging about her fashion choices because I got bored with repeating myself. I will say that she actually can dress quite nicely, if she sticks to solid colors, belts at the waist (not higher), and avoids the Tina Turner-esque hair. But even then she is no Princess Di.

The designation of her as fashion icon is the distaff equivalent of the designation of her husband by some (often the same people) as a great - or even a competent - President.

Per:

"(Is she tithing to Princeton these days? I bet not.)"

If Princeton Alumni Weekly is considered a credible source, they have printed once she left Princeton she never returned. Nor did she contribute to...class notes.

As a contrast, Princeton Alumni weekly - through his class secretary -used to receive transalantic cables from F.Scott Fitzgerald. In the past year or two they reprinted them - quite fun to read as he spoke of his projects he was working on - projects that were to become such important works.

Michelle did return to Princeton. It was after her husband was a US Senator and considered a potential presidential candidate. She returned at Princeton's request --to serve on some committee. I can't recall if she's actually visited the joint - I'd think I'd recall the photos if not her outfit.

Per:

"Again, she seems like an intelligent, nice lady."

One question - would an intelligent and nice lady be a member of Rev. Jeremiah Wright's church for 20 years? As well as have him marry her and baptize her children?

Look on the bright side. They didn't go with "Minister Farrakhan."

I've regularly attended churches where the priests were known to say some fairly appalling things*. I wouldn't want to be judged by their idiosyncrasies, and I'm not going to judge Obama either -- since he and his wife were almost certainly there not for religious devotion but to "network" among Chicago's black community. That might not be what motivates you and me on Sunday mornings, but how is it worse than a Methodist deciding that he should become an Episcopalian because it might raise his social status?

Alright, a couple of things to unpack here. The motivation aspect - fair enough. On the surface no it's not worse. Lots of nominal Christians as the Obamas can only best be described as use their church membership to help them professional and socially(club memberships) all the time.

But when you look a bit deeper -what Episcopal Church preaches the $%&^#@@ Wright did/does? Sure the Episcopal Church is ant-Israel, but it doesn't say the sorts of things Wright does. Who would want their young children as the Obama children were when they attended Wright's church hearing such hatred? From a respected Church leader no less?

Oprah was once a member of Wright's church. She left because of what she heard from the pulpit. And it's been written that was because she felt the connection would harm her professionally. Interesting,no?

When Obama was asked about what he heard while at Wright's church - he said he never heard them or some punt like that. . Yet Obama also said for years Wright was his spiritual advisor.

A Methodist would have to look long and hard to discover an Episcopal parish that preaches the -excuse me - crap Wright does. If they were able to find one, guess what? Chances are joining that parish wouldn't help them professionally or socially. At least not in the circles/neighborhoods most Episcopalians prefer to travel in.

Also an intelligent and nice Methodist also has one up on Obama history-wise- he/she can say - "I'm not joining the Episcopal Church for professional/social betterment (is that a word?) but because I no longer want to be schismatic. I want to come home."

The Methodists are an offshoot of the Episcopal Church. They can hide behind that if they're smart enough like a grad of Princeton and Harvard Law should be.

You nailed why the Obamas first arrived at Wright's Church. Networking. However, it is the reason they stayed all those years plus exposed their children to his preaching that is inexplicable. Unless of course, they liked what they heard.

When you see how President Obama has treated Israel, it is possible to conclude that Obama did like what he heard. Though how does one square Libya with what he's done to Israel?

Oh and if you google up Michelle Obama and Mrs. Farrakhan, you'll find a picture of the two of them. They're neighbors. I never knew what Mrs. Farrakhan looked liked until i went looking in google for one of Michelle's more memorable outfits...

Oh, and does anyone know why was Michelle's law license taken away from her?
