Romney's French

FLG had no idea Romney spoke French. Or maybe he did but utterly forgot. In either case, he does agree with this assessment:
Mr Romney combines a thick American accent with a robotic delivery

I bet, but it does at least give him one more foreign language than Obama - and I bet Romney doesn't lecture voters on how they should really speak a foreign language because otherwise they're ignorant Americans.

The man himself said, in 2008: "I don't speak a foreign language. It's embarrassing!"

I presume Columbia's requirement postdates Obama's time there, or that he did something sneaky to get around it, like take Latin...

(Just to be clear: I am behind Americans learning foreign languages, but I'm not behind those who don't getting high and mighty about it. I imagine that within my lifetime any serious candidate for the Presidency will have to at least speak Spanish.)

I would be willing to bet that Columbia had a fl requirement even in Obama's day.

Maybe they passed him through on the basis of his schoolboy Bahasa. It wouldn't be the worst thing a university ever did.

Surely it's possible that he took a modern foreign language and is just refreshingly honest enough to admit that he didn't learn it well enough to be able to speak it?
