Times Horizons: Cradle To Grave Edition

Tim Kowal quotes Edward Bellamy in a post about public sector unions:
“No man any more has any care for the morrow, either for himself or his children, for the nation guarantees the nurture, education, and comfortable maintenance of every citizen from the cradle to the grave.”

No care for the morrow...?

FLG keeps tellin' you, this time horizon thing has got legs.

There’s more that’s corrupt here than a socialist cradle to grave indolence, more even than the paternalism and loss of freedom that is part of that bargain. That contract, that civilization was an agreement taking into account the dead, the living, and the unborn, has been altogether abrogated.

The dead are dead white male no-accounts forever blackened by a litany of social sins and the unborn are a burden to feckless individuals and their torpid society. That leaves the living, contentedly superior to the past and therefore entitled to what would have belonged to the future.
