Correspondence

A reader sends along a link to Todd Seavey's site. Apparently, after a wisely taken two month post-frighteningly creepy CSPAN2 diatribe hiatus, he has decided to return to the world of blogging with a "Month of Haters." (BTW, first up? Catholics.)

Since the CSPAN episode, FLG felt bad for Helen. We all have crazy ex's. It's just the way of life. Although, most don't embarrass us on CSPAN.

But now FLG has begun to feel bad for Mr. Seavey. It's clear he possesses all of the interpersonal skills and emotional mastery of a fourteen year-old girl. FLG writes this with no malice or ill-intent, merely a statement of fact. People with class simply don't do these things. Only the most emotionally stunted, self-involved individuals -- often teenage girls, but libertarians can be self-involved as well -- do.

FLG, you don't know Helen or Todd. So, what's your stake in the deal?

Well, FLG hopes that rather than lashing out like a spoiled child, Mr. Seavey will realize that when a complete stranger says, "You, sir, are acting like a fucking jackass. The best possible thing you could do issue a simple apology to Helen, never mention the topic again, and then hope people forget," that he is doing precisely the opposite and violating the rule of holes -- when you are in one, stop digging.

Then again, maybe Mr. Seavey really is some sort of sick fuck who has no idea how decent, adult human beings act toward each other. Or maybe he's a sick fuck sociopath who knows, but doesn't care. Either way, it's all very unbecoming.

Or maybe he's just following his bliss.

P.S. As for "the lady" in question, I feel no real sympathy. People who lead disorderly lives have to expect a spot of trouble every now and then.

P.P.S. You did see Mankiw today, right? And you're just trying to get that monkey off your back, right?

So an atheist - Todd Seavey- is launching a month of hate beginning...what was it --- as yes--Catholics?

The default posish of all atheists. Atheist never really live up to their free thinking reputation, do they?

(Fingers and toes crossed that I'm on his list)

Yeah, I was surprised when I saw that. I happened to know just a little bit of extra information about their situation, which initially made me somewhat sympathetic to Seavey (though not to blowing up on CSPAN, which is just a dick move). This appears designed to systematically alienate anyone who might've taken his side.

Mrs P --

I think you've got it all wrong.

Atheists have to start with Catholics.

That so may choose instead to pick on hapless Anglicans or wayward Primitive Baptists says more about Evangelical Atheists (Dawkins, Hitchens, Dennett, Harris) than their intended victims.

Yours sincerely (in an ultramontane-sort-of-way)

This is why that CSPAN tirade is a career killer for the both of them: Neither of them is *ever* going to write anything as interesting as his tirade was.

Tant pis.

Ancient - I agree with you completely. Even in an ultramontane-sort-of-way.

If Seavey wanted to top himself, he needed to launch his month of hate - not set it up. Setting it up raised the bar too high but who knows? Maybe, out there, there lurks a vein of hate so deep and so vile that is directed at Seavey by Catholics&fellow travelers that not only tops Seavey's creep factor but will fill an entire month's calendar of blog posts.

This is still the age of Obama. The oceans may not have lowered ( or were they to rise?), we may not have beaten back our oil addiction or be treating our sick yet, but hope, real hope is still alive. We're counting on you Seavey.

"my heroic confrontation" - The trouble with heroism is that it's really in the hands of the "cretinous mob" to determine. But otherwise, good to see he's really gained perspective on the whole thing.

I've now read his first "Catholic hater" post.

1) Seavey seems not to know that brevity is more than the soul of lingerie.

(I blame Helen.)

2) Who let him into a meeting of the American Philosophical Association?

(And why did he omit the response to his question about the compatibility of faith and philosophy given by the author of On Bullshit?)

Ancient -hahahahahahaahahahaha.

Historically speaking in a advertising sort of way - successful marketers -be it Coca-cola execs or cuckolded, Atheist libertarians who melted down publicly on the most boring cable channel known to uneducated man launch their campaigns with the strongest ad they've got. The goal of Seavey's campaign is to weaken "Anti-Todd" and drive up "Pro-Todd" by trying to convince his world that a lot of otherwise moral people hate him and have taken to defending a not so moral Catholic woman . Or taking him completely at his word - an amoral Catholic woman. Seavey has to be unfamiliar with Lucrezia Borgia (and Nancy Pelois for that matter). Lucretia was the illegitimate daughter of Rodrigo Borgia who after fathering a family went on to be Pope Alexander VI. Cuckolding was child's paly for Lucretia. She had some great jewelry in which she hid poison should she discover she was dinning with someone too tiresome to bed. The historical record shows that Lucretia did present herself for communion each time she was at Mass. Even during her all too brief stint as Pope. Unfortunately in his ignorance Seavey has really undertaken to re-invent the wheel. Anyhoo, let's look at Seavey's prima-facie case of Catholic hate - from the blog TheAmerican Catholic and ask yourself if it proves 1. Catholic hate. 2. Helen is amoral and being defended by the moral:

"Todd Seavey, a libertarian, decided that a C-Span panel was an excellent time to go after Helen Rittelmeyer, a Catholic Conservative, who had broken up with him after a romantic relationship. Rittelmeyer handled herself with aplomb under the onslaught and Seavey behaved like a Triple A Grade Jerk."

Seavey needs to hire an ad guy. If he had hired me, I would have advised holding off on this until day 13 or 14 of hate and gone with a better one. But he must not have had one. So what to do? Easy - go with a heretic. Historically-speaking heretics have been almost as reviled as Catholics which makes their burnt at the stake percentage is almost as high. A (judiciously edited) heretic was the far better choice. To wit, literally:

"Apparently, after a wisely taken two month post-frighteningly creepy CSPAN2 diatribe hiatus, [Seavey] has decided to return to the world of blogging with a "Month of Haters." [..] FLG has begun to feel bad for Mr. Seavey. It's clear he possesses all of the interpersonal skills and emotional mastery of a fourteen year-old girl. [...] Only the most emotionally stunted, self-involved individuals -- often teenage girls, but libertarians can be self-involved as well -- do. [...] FLG hopes that rather than lashing out like a spoiled child, Mr. Seavey will realize that when a complete stranger says, "You, sir, are acting like a fucking jackass. The best possible thing you could do issue a simple apology [...] Then again, maybe Mr. Seavey really is some sort of sick fuck who has no idea how decent, adult human beings act toward each other. Or maybe he's a sick fuck sociopath who knows, but doesn't care."

If you're looking for hate - you will find it there - not that it really is there as a key sentence was judiciously edited out. Unfortunately for Seavey it doesn't prove his ultimate assertion : Helen is amoral and moral people are defending her. Seavey is now Avis: when you're number two, you have to try harder. Chin up Seavey, there are 30 days to prove your thesis with the only distraction in D.C being a new GOP led congress promising to repeal health care and an increasingly unraveling presidency to divert your viewers' attention.

Damn you, FLG.

Now, thanks to you, I can't stop checking Todd Seavey's site, which it never occurred to me to look at before. The month of haters promises to be hilarious. From today's offering:

As a new, Tea Party-influenced Congress is sworn in, it may be a fitting time to reveal that failed, Tea Party-backed, abstinence-promoting Republican Senate candidate from Delaware Christine O'Donnell and I have kissed the same woman -- a punk in fact, but not a conservative. (Prior to her religious awakening, the young O'Donnell had wild parties and wild acquaintances, some with tattoos and heroin habits, though it wasn't a junkie that kissed us both.) I would not necessarily conclude that O'Donnell is bi, though her sister is a lesbian, and my impression is that homosexuality and a certain open-mindedness often run in families.

I know this is all obnoxious and pathetic and wrong but I just can't. stop. reading. It's like watching the most stupendous car wreck that ever was.

Not really true. You're thinking of the predominantly English New Atheists like Dawkins and Hitchens. Their anti-religion does usually begin with anti-Catholicism, but this is just because they learned anti-Catholicism at their mothers' knees. For many American atheists, like Sam Harris, anti-religion begins with Islam. For others, like most leftist atheists who comment on blogs and message boards, it's Protestant fundamentalism which riles them. I don't think Seavey was inclined to take on Catholics prior to this little matter, indicating that it wasn't his default position, but rather part and parcel of the whole Rittelmeyer situation.
