FLG and Miss Self-Important are on opposite sides of the Timothy Dwight issue. Although, FLG had softened his position of late.
But then MSI important points out in a recent post that our beloved Mr. Dwight wrote poetry. Bad poetry. In fairness, FLG isn't a good critic of poetry, but nevertheless more tallies in the Dwight was fucking insane column.

One of cousin Timothy's ancestors wrote a very lively piece entitled "The Fear of Hell Restrains Men from Sin."
(I can't remember a specific reference to sex with inanimate objects, but perhaps that's caught up in the penumbra of "fun.")
P.S. His much smarter, equally batty grandfather died of smallpox vaccination. Perhaps that instilled some distrust of science and all its works. As for his first cousin, Aaron Burr ...
This is totally uncrazy. He is just opposed to natural theology and universalism, but pro-science (note that Newton, Bacon, Locke all win accolades here). But yes, there is a reason why the first notable American writer is considered to be Melville and not Dwight.
Also, his entire lineage is basically American divine royalty. Thomas Hooker, Jonathan Edwards...
Hey, he's a cousin of mine!
