FLG's Paper In The News

One of the points FLG is making, although it is a relatively minor one, is that the elevation of labor over leisure has had the effect of transforming education, which in Aristotle's mind was to prepare for leisure, into preparation for intellectual work, or worse intellectual labor. This leaves the educated ill-prepared for leisure when the opportunity arrives.

And, as serendipity would have it, Yale Law School grads decide to prove my point. A law firm offered them $80k to put off their first day of work until next year, but none of them took it even when their employment a year from now was guaranteed.

Fascinating. What does Adam Smith say about leisure?

Knowing a few people in this situation, 1. $80,000 is usually a pretty big step down (an issue if you are, for example, trying to live in NYC and paying off massive student loans) and 2. Some (more than you might expect) of these deferments become permanent. A guarantee means nothing in this context.

Funny you should ask. I'm in the process of reading a paper on the topic, which happens to have been written by a Georgetown post-doc.

Hilarius, but they were going to make student loan payments for them and provide benefits.

And can you say something about the changing relationship of leisure to the formation of character?

Dear Anonymous,

As a poor graduate student, I'm very interested in this AimTrust thing. If you could send me your bank account and routing number, I'd be glad to directly transfer the initial $500.

Thanks,
Hilarius Bookbinder
