All I know is, when Plato actually tried to put his theory of the ideal state into practice at Syracuse in the mid-4C BC, it failed wretchedly. See Letters VII and VIII (Letter VIII is probably spurious, though).
Same thing happened to Aristotle, or rather his pupil Demetrius of Phalerum, in Athens ca. 315-306 BC.
