French Protectionism

Il y a deux mois, le 15 novembre 2008, les dirigeants des vingt principales puissances économiques mondiales tenaient une réunion qualifiée d'"historique" à Washington pour tenter de remédier à la crise financière mondiale.

Parmi leurs engagements, le rejet du protectionnisme.

Et, ici et là, nous assistons bel et bien à une nouvelle tentation protectionniste. L'histoire retiendra peut-être que le dernier legs de George Bush au commerce international aura été l'annonce, le 15 janvier, d'un triplement de la taxe sur le roquefort, une décision qui nous ramène douze ans en arrière. Ce ne serait qu'anecdotique si le même jour Nicolas Sarkozy, flamboyant "président de l'Europe" durant un semestre, ne conditionnait les aides à l'automobile à la "localisation des emplois en France". Entre les Etats-Unis et l'Europe, le contentieux sur l'automobile n'est pas loin. Il y a quelques jours, Angela Merkel s'est inquiétée du plan d'aide américain à Detroit.

With Sarkozy creating a French sovereign wealth fund, we are going to have a rough patch. Did anybody else find the complaint about the tax on roquefort as funny as I do? Probably not.
