When I took the LSAT you said don't become a lawyer. When I take the GRE, you warn me about becoming a professor. Incidentally, that's not my intention. Nevertheless, what would you have me do? Ski instructors only work for part of the year. Piracy is a dangerousprofession. I ain't goin' the Fred Garvin route.
Sincerely,FLG

BFIIK. I'm trying hard to think what will work for my kids, too. The lawyer business - it works, or has worked, for the very top, folks who went to top-14 schools and graduated well. My wife has had a nice career as a lawyer, intellectually interesting work and (mostly) decent surroundings. Others we know who went to non-top-14 schools have had a really dreadful time hustling for wills-and-divorces or even (eeeuw) reviewing discovery documents for $30 an hour. You sneer at the civil service, but there are a lot of fun jobs there, doing work which has survived legislative competition for funding with other initiatives, so presumably pretty urgent. The Stanley Fish article about the professoriate and its prospects seems dead on to me as a view of the future there. Volcker gave a speech several years ago in which he warned (damn! that guy is smart!) that we were spending 4% of GDP on financial services, that historical levels were closer to 1 1/2%, and he didn't think this was sustainable. Well, shit, there goes Wall Street. And, prices for homes have been dropping in Connecticut.
Scrambling up the greasy pole at Chrysler doesn't look good. I really don't know.
Your politics are not a good fit with the easy certitudes of either party, so if you do politics you'll have to be a hypocrite, that's not very fun even if you are successful. 'Find something you like to do which people will pay you for' is almost an insult, it's so trite. dave.s.
I have to say that my current employment at Room 101 is very infrequently interesting, but well-paid and easy. I, and your kids, will figure out something.
All I can say is, it's a damn good thing for miss FLoG that she was conceived before the election: http://www.futurepundit.com/archives/006663.html

I voted for Obama.
