Uh, I worry about leading scientists

Telegraph:
An asteroid shield must be built to protect the earth as a matter of emergency, leading scientists have told the United Nations.

An international network must be established to search the skies for asteroids on a collision course with Earth, they warned.

The system would also need to be responsible for deploying spacecraft that could destroy or deflect incoming objects.

Although an asteroid collision with the planet is a relatively remote risk, the consequences of a strike would be devastating, the scientists told a UN delegation in Vienna.

What the fuck are we supposed to do about it if we find one? Do they really think we can "destroy or deflect" really big "incoming objects?"

Actually, maybe this would be a good thing because the dust that gets kicked up would probably fix the other issue leading scientists are so concerned about -- global warming. Or perhaps they're all just full of shit.

Oh, and on an only somewhat related note, Obama's economic stimulus plan to subsidize making buildings more energy efficient is very similar to breaking windows. Instead of using hammers or rocks, he's just declaring them broken by fiat.
