Angelina Jolie seems to be pro-surge

She writes:

As for the question of whether the surge is working, I can only state what I witnessed: U.N. staff and those of non-governmental organizations seem to feel they have the right set of circumstances to attempt to scale up their programs. And when I asked the troops if they wanted to go home as soon as possible, they said that they miss home but feel invested in Iraq. They have lost many friends and want to be a part of the humanitarian progress they now feel is possible.

To be honest, I am not sure that what a movie star thinks, even if they are a goodwill ambassador and have visited the region, is something we should give much credence to when making strategy decisions. Much like when I poo-poo'd the visit by the Heroes cheerleader to talk about whales at Georgetown. They have no more authority of the issue than the average person, yet their voice is far louder.

I was with you until I got to the very end of your comment. Average Joes like me can have reasonable and informed opinions about Iraq, and we can make people listen to us if we are persistent. But, we would have more authority if we were hot. People like Jolie have an advantage not in the loudness of their voices but in a separate and very key quality--hotness. Hotness is the key to resolving the conflict in Iraq and everywhere. Let's face it, I have a better than average chest, but I cannot compare with Jolie. Even if her chest is only average, and mine is above average, the fact that she is a woman, and hot, makes her more of an authority than I am. What is an authority? Someone who commands attention and action. Hotness plays an important role. Who looks at my chest and says, "I think I better stick around and hear what he has to say?" I fall short even when I use my Eric Cartman voice and say, "You will respect my authoritay!" If I had the magical quality of hotness, you would all listen! Then, I would have real authoritay! Let us hope that Angelina Jolie uses her hotness for good, not evil.

My point about authority is that somebody needs to have some sort of demonstrated knowledge of the topic they are discussing. Angelina Jolie wants to talk about acting, fine. However, running all over the world in between movies cannot give her enough time to give more than an cursory investigation into the issues she is promoting. I think she means well, and it is impossible to argue against feeding children, etc.

However, her hotness should not be a source of authority. It should be knowledge. I would hold a unattractive international development worker's opinion in far higher regard.

But you are right. People will listen to her because she has great boobs. It isn't right, it is just the way it is. It shouldn't be though.

Nonetheless, I am thinking about implants and other ways to increase my hotness. I need authoritay!
